Welcome to Lifelong Learning and Career Planning. In this class students explore themselves to find a career that interests them and plan an education to reach their career goal. We will look at tools to explore careers, study skills to stay on the academic path, and develop an educational plan that will meet the matriculation requirement.

Course Description

This survey course is designed to increase academic motivation and career success throughout the lifespan. In particular, students will learn to examine how an individual’s psychological, social, and environmental factors impact academic, career and personal life choices. Through this exploration, students will apply these topics as they related to their personal and professional self-development and to the discovery of many new options for improving all aspects of their lives. The historical view of careers, current career trends, and employment outlook will be studied. Various methods of researching academic and career opportunities will be explored to assist students. Satisfies th5 educational planning graduation requirement for Bakersfield College.

Course Objectives:

  1. Explain principles of motivation, attitude and behavioral modification
  2. Identify and apply individual learning styles and personality type preferences as they relate to academic skills, self-understanding, and choices
  3. Formulate a list of lifetime goals based on values, skills and interests
  4. Develop an educational and career plan consistent with goals
  5. Apply and practice critical and creative thinking processes as they apply to decision making and problem solving techniques
  6. Explore and develop awareness and appreciation of social and cultural diversity
  7. Apply critical thinking skills in utilizing technology as a resource
  8. Identify psychosocial factors such as self-esteem, self-efficacy, and self-concept that impact academic perceptions
  9. List the socio-emotional issues that impact academic success
  10. Identify important values, skills, and interests
  11. Select a tentative career goal compatible with one’s values, personality, skills, interests, and goals
  12. Identify and use career decision-making models to focus on occupational choices

STDV B2 Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course it is expected that students will be able to:

  1. Analyze and investigate careers and identify the appropriate career pathways and select career options, educational/career goals
  2. Articulate and evaluate expectations from college and educational experiences and identify educational/career goals and evaluate how to reach those goals
  3. Identify and examine personal values related to career choice
  4. Construct and outline goals through counselor assisted analysis of their educational, career and personal objectives
